Ange must finally cash in on Spurs man who earns over 5x more than Doue

After a Premier League season that saw them go unbeaten for the first ten games, only to miss out on Champions League football at the end, it has to be a big summer of transfer activity for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou has proven that he's got the ability to be a success in England's top flight, and now Daniel Levy needs to dig into his pockets to give him the proper backing to succeed in North London.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

However, while bringing in the right players is crucial, so is getting rid of those no longer good enough.

One player, who arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with huge potential, has failed to deliver, with Ange needing to offload him given his hefty wages.

Sergio Reguilon’s Tottenham Hotspur career

At the time, signing left-back Sergio Reguilon for £32m seemed like incredible business by the club, acquiring a talent who could nail down the full-back role for many years to come in north London.

sergio-reguilon-real-madrid-tottenham-hotspur-emerson-transfer

Before his move to Spurs, the Spaniard was named La Liga's best left-back in 2019/20 while on loan with Sevilla, winning the Europa League – but the Lilywhites faithful have failed to see the best of the defender.

After two years in north London, Reguilon completed a loan move back to his homeland and joined Atlético Madrid, in an unsuccessful stint that provided him with a series of injuries and just two starts in La Liga.

He’s since had various loan stints at fellow Premier League sides Manchester United and Brentford, but once again failed to impress with neither side signing the 27-year-old on a permanent basis.

Reguilon has only featured 67 times for Spurs since his big-money transfer, with the club investing in fellow left-back Destiny Udogie to fill the void which the Spaniard failed to claim after his move from the Spanish giants.

Having signed a five-year contract in 2020, Reguilon is out of contract in 2025, and it's highly unlikely that his deal will be renewed, with this summer the last opportunity to recoup some of the £32m the club splashed on him four years ago.

How much Sergio Reguilon earns at Tottenham Hotspur

Whilst he’s not the highest earner in the Spurs squad, the Spaniard still earns a huge chunk, especially considering he’s not featured for the club in two seasons.

According to Capology, the 27-year-old earns £53k-per-week in north London, pocketing a huge £2.7m in wages every season.

As a result, Reguilon has taken home a staggering £5.4m since he last pulled on the shirt of Tottenham Hotspur, with the club being bled dry by the one-time promising talent.

His subsequent weekly wage is over five times higher than that of current transfer target Desire Doue, who only earns £8k-per-week, despite Spurs’ £60m interest in the 19-year-old wonderkid.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

Postecoglou’s side aren’t the only side interested in the French youngster, with Bayern Munich and PSG also said to be interested in his services this summer.

If they are to be able to fund a move for Doue, the sale of Reguilon – who has been touted with a new £10m price tag – would massively boost their chances of landing the in-demand superstar.

It’s been a disastrous move for both parties, with Spurs needing to offload him to enable them to be competitive in the market, whilst Reguilon will be desperate for a transfer to kickstart his career after a stuttering stint in north London.

Ranji Trophy not yet ruled out, Ganguly keen

Board to seek views of states during SMA on conducting further domestic tournaments

The BCCI is set to explore all options to stage the Ranji Trophy•BCCI

In a positive development for India’s domestic cricket, the BCCI has not yet given up on hosting the Ranji Trophy despite the Covid-19 pandemic severely affecting the calendar. Recently the BCCI announced it would be conducting the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (domestic T20s) from January 10 to 31 in bio-secure bubbles across India. It would then seek views of the states after the league phase of the SMA Trophy on conducting further domestic tournaments. It is understood board president Sourav Ganguly himself voiced strong support for conducting the Ranji Trophy, the premier domestic tournament, at the BCCI’s AGM in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Ganguly told the members that the BCCI and the states must explore all options to host the Ranji Trophy. It is expected the BCCI would follow the SMA Trophy with the Vijay Hazare Trophy (domestic 50-over tournament) and the Ranji Trophy, if possible. The BCCI also has plans to conduct age-group and women’s cricket during the IPL which his scheduled for April-May next year. As a shot in the arm for domestic players – both men and women – the BCCI decided to compensate players for the loss of cricket during the pandemic. What that compensation would be, will be worked out once the BCCI has finalised the domestic calendar.Related

The BCCI has also decided to increase the retirement age for domestic match officials and scorers from 55 to 60. Meanwhile, the medical insurance for players in domestic cricket has been raised from INR 5 lakh to INR 10 lakh.Setback for BCCI’s cricket operations
The BCCI’s cricket operations team has thinned down further after the board “terminated” the contract of KVP Rao, assistant manager, cricket operations. Rao, a former Bihar bowler, is the second senior official the BCCI has lost from its cricket operations team this year. Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim had told the board he would leave his post of general manager, cricket operations, in January after he had officially resigned in July.Rao informed the state associations about his departure on Thursday, about an hour before the BCCI’s AGM started in Ahmedabad.Rao’s sacking comes only two weeks prior to the start of the Indian domestic season with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, from January 10. Rao, one of the senior-most BCCI officials, was the backbone of domestic cricket operations – right from planning the calendar, venues and the format to the execution.Rao, who took 212 first-class wickets, was with the BCCI for nearly a decade. He was the tournament operations manager for two global tournaments in India: the 2013 Women’s World Cup and the 2016 Men’s T20 World Cup. He was also one of the planners for the exhaustive domestic calendar across all formats and age-groups in 2018-19 for both men and women involving more than 2000 matches. That the separation was not amicable was made clear by Rao in his email to the state associations. In the email, Rao said the BCCI had decided to “terminate” his contract on December 22 which he called “the best day of my life as this termination will provide me ample opportunities to further my profession skills elsewhere.”

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah allege racial abuse by SCG crowd

It could not be ascertained whether the Indian team management has officially lodged a complaint

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are among the Indian players to have complained to match officials about alleged racist abuse and foul language directed at them from sections of the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the ongoing third Test against Australia.ESPNcricinfo understands that up to four Indian players were at the receiving end of the abuse, which was reported by the Indian team to the on-field umpires and the match referee at the end of third day’s play. The incident further dampened the mood in the visitors’ dressing room after India endured a difficult Saturday, as Australia ended a dominant day taking a 197-run lead with eight second-innings wickets in hand.It could not be confirmed whether India have lodged an official written complaint with the match officials yet. Not much detail, too, has emerged about the alleged abuse, which is understood to have been taken place more than once. The fact a problem had arisen emerged at stumps when a group of senior India players, including captain Ajinkya Rahane, had a lengthy conversation with umpires Paul Wilson and Paul Reiffel before the discussions were taken to the dressing room. It is understood that match referee David Boon visited the Indian dressing room after that and there were further conversations between India officials and security staff outside. Fingers were pointed towards an area at the Randwick End where Siraj had been stationed when fielding at fine leg. Siraj was then spoken to by officials shortly before the team left the ground.Last year, New Zealand Cricket banned a fan from entering all their venues after being found guilty of racially abusing England fast bowler Jofra Archer in 2019. The 28-year-old fan had pleaded guilty of using insulting language against Archer. Cricket Australia, not ICC, to probe ‘inappropriate conduct’ Although the match officials are appointed by the ICC, Cricket Australia, the hosts, will be the adjudicating authority in this case. Incidents such as these are classified as ‘inappropriate conduct’ in ICC’s anti-discrimination policy that was updated in August 2019. This policy is followed by ICC and all member countries in tournaments – both international and domestic – they conduct.Any incident(s) need to be filed with the ICC within two weeks after the match by the anti-discrimination administrator. Under the policy, the ICC has recommended boards need to remind spectators at all times before and during a match about about inappropriate conduct.”It shall be a breach of the terms and conditions of entry to the venue for any ticket-holder to engage in any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise) which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any other person (including players, match officials or spectators) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, colour, descent, nationality, ethnic origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability, marital status and/or maternity status,” the policy states.”Such action will not be tolerated and is likely to result in ejection from the venue, the imposition of other sanctions, such as being banned from the venue in the future and possible further action including criminal prosecution.”

Newcastle now close to signing £50k-a-week player; personal terms agreed

Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing an "unbelievable" Premier League player this summer, with personal terms already agreed.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been linked with so many players since the end of last season, with Eddie Howe clearly aware that improvements were needed after a disappointing campaign by their recent standards, especially to 2022/23 when they qualified for the Champions League.

Almeria right-back Marc Pubill has been mentioned as a possible arrival at St James' Park this summer, with the 21-year-old a potential long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier, who could move on this summer and whose very best days are now arguably behind him. He started 22 La Liga games in 2023/24, chipping in with three assists in that time.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is another player who could be an option for Newcastle between now and the beginning of the new campaign, with the likes of Manchester United and West Ham also in the race to sign him.

More wide attacking options have also been linked with the Magpies of late, from Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville to Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga, with Howe clearly wanting more consistency and end products on the flanks.

Newcastle closing in on signing "unbelievable" Chelsea player

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, with personal terms already agreed.

The Englishman is "expected to be the most likely of the club’s right-wing targets to join", with the Magpies actively looking for upgrades on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy in that role.

Noni Madueke

Madueke is certainly a talented footballer, having an effortless ability to drift inside from the right wing and cut onto his deadly left foot, but there is an argument to say that he also doesn't deliver enough end product.

Last season, the £50,000-a-week ace only scored five goals and bagged two assists in 23 Premier League matches, and while only 13 of those were actually starts, it still isn't exactly earth-shattering. Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for the Chelsea man during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, though, saying:

"Noni Madueke today, for me, unbelievable. If you analyse him from the start of the season; all the conversations and meetings, clips and videos, things like this. He was capable today of doing a fantastic job with the ball – of course, he is an offensive player – but without the ball, he is doing a fantastic job helping Alfie [Gilchrist] defend."

Bye-bye Trippier: Newcastle want Olympic star who'd be perfect for Isak

He’s set for a summer transfer ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 26, 2024

At 22, Madueke is still a young player with promise, however, and could still represent a long-term improvement on the likes of Almiron and Murphy, both of whom have had their moments at Newcastle but are now both 30 and 29 years of age respectively. The young winger may also not become a world-beater, but he would help add an extra dimension in wide areas, possessing pace, power and trickery.

Mark Wood withdraws from IPL auction

Franchises had registered interest but Wood has opted to spend time at home with family

Mark Wood has withdrawn from the IPL auction•Getty Images

Mark Wood has withdrawn his name from the IPL’s longlist on the eve of Wednesday’s player auction. It is understood that franchises were told at a briefing in Chennai on Wednesday that Wood had decided to pull out of the auction in order to spend time with his family at home. Wood, who is the father of a young child, was rested for England’s first two Tests in India but has returned to the squad ahead of the remaining two matches and the white-ball leg of the tour, which runs until March 28.Wood had put himself forward at the highest base price (2 crore/£200,000) ahead of the auction, and is understood to have attracted some interest from franchises, but opted to withdraw his name in advance rather than pulling out after selection. He had previously been lined up by Mumbai Indians as a potential replacement for Lasith Malinga ahead of the 2020 season, but decided not to take up their offer, with the franchise ultimately signing James Pattinson instead. He was signed by Chennai Super Kings for the 2018 season, but played only once, conceding 49 runs in his four overs.Related

Wood’s withdrawal from the IPL shines an unfavourable light on England’s central contracts system. Despite being named in squads for England’s last five Test series and a long run of involvement in their limited-overs set-up, Wood only holds a white-ball central contract, meaning that he earns significantly less than Test specialists on red-ball deals – not least with match fees and bonuses reportedly cut during the pandemic. However, while he might normally expect to supplement his income with contracts in franchise tournaments, England’s packed schedule in 2021 has left him feeling unable to do so, instead reasoning that he needs to rest ahead of another busy home summer. Given Wood has previously admitted considering pursuing a white-ball-only career, his example may prompt calls for a reformed contract structure, not least with the backdrop of Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach, defending the ECB’s attitude towards the IPL on Wednesday.Wood’s withdrawal means that there are 16 English players due to go under the hammer in Wednesday’s auction, including Dawid Malan, Alex Hales, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy and Adil Rashid. Among those missing are Tom Banton and James Vince, both of whom decided against entering the auction in order to ensure their availability for the start of the County Championship season in April.Joe Root also declined to put his name forward for the second auction in a row, despite recently re-stating his ambition to force his way into England’s T20 World Cup plans.”I am desperate to be part of an IPL season and hopefully a few more beyond,” Root said last week. “[But] with the amount of Test cricket in particular this year, it didn’t feel like it was the right time and I didn’t feel like I could throw all my energy into it, which I think it deserves.”

Leeds could find new Raphinha in swoop for £14m "unsung hero"

Leeds United have made four additions to their first-team squad during the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business last month.

Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, and Joe Rothwell have all come through the door to bolster Daniel Farke's options across the pitch, with a centre-back, a goalkeeper, a right-back, and a midfielder added.

One area of the pitch the Whites are yet to make an addition in, however, is the final third as they have yet to pounce on a winger or a striker to improve their forward line.

The West Yorkshire outfit have, though, been linked with attackers throughout the summer transfer window and one of them could be their next version of Raphinha.

Raphinha's magical play for Leeds

The Whites signed the Brazilian wizard from Rennes in the summer of 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa and he hit the ground running at Elland Road in the Premier League.

Across two seasons in the top-flight with Leeds, Raphinha showcased his ability to make a big impact in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

As you can see in the table above, the South American right winger chipped in with 17 goals and 12 assists in those two campaigns to help his side avoid relegation both times.

Raphinha then completed a £55m move to Barcelona in the summer of 2022 and Leeds could finally replace the magician by landing another South American sensation who operates on the right flank.

Leeds' new Raphinha

In June, it was reportedly in the Brazilian media, via the Yorkshire Evening Post, that Leeds are keen on a deal to sign Fluminense forward Jhon Arias this summer, who had been the subject of a £14m offer from West Ham United at the time.

The 26-year-old ace has only produced one goal and two assists in ten Serie A matches this term but his form throughout 2023 and 2022 suggests that the potential is there for him to be a fantastic signing.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Like Raphinha, Arias is a South American right winger who could provide Leeds with a consistent stream of quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

These statistics suggest that the Colombian whiz, who was described as an "unsung hero" by South American writer Nathan Joyce, has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch.
