Maitland-Niles an exciting talent who’s already making Gary Neville eat his words

When Arsene Wenger dropped summer signing Sead Kolasinac following an impressive start to his Arsenal career in favour of academy product Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the decision certainly raised some eyebrows.

We’ve seen this kind of thing before from the Gunners gaffer – unexpectedly axing a senior player enjoying good form to make room for a younger alternative – with incredibly mixed results.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville was one of the first to raise concerns after Maitland-Niles, a midfielder first and foremost, struggled at left-back in a 3-3 draw with Liverpool a fortnight ago. As quoted by The Express, he said during the clash at the Emirates Stadium…

“Maitland-Niles, I always say that when the ball’s on your side it’s fine, but when you have to start searching for people you get drawn into a position you should never be. You can talk about not being targeted, but he has been targeted at that back post.

“It’s been a real problem for him and there’s been big, big chances for Liverpool. Again, look at the back post, ball-watching, not knowing the position. It’s tough on the kid, I’m not sure why you would put him in this game. When I look at that first half, he has struggled for me.”

But there are few greater endorsements for a young and promising 20-year-old in the Premier League than making such a reputed pundit completely change his tune after just two more starts and 13 days, which is exactly what Maitland-Niles did last night as Arsenal duked out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

While the Gunners struggled defensively and although Maitland-Niles wasn’t directly involved in either of his side’s goals, it was an incredibly composed and promising performance from the England U21.

Indeed, the youngster actually finished up with the most successful dribbles – most notably a darting run inside the box that almost drew a penalty – and the most tackles to his name of any Arsenal player -including a clean challenge to nick the ball from Eden Hazard, something even the best defenders in the world struggle with.

On top of that, Maitland-Niles whipped three crosses into the box, created one chance, completed 88% of his passes and had the most touches of any Arsenal player not playing in midfield.

Accordingly, Neville’s assessment of the versatile 5 foot 10 hotshot was markedly different last night, even describing him as ‘absolutely fantastic’.

“He looks absolutely fantastic. It’s so early in his Arsenal career and to play in huge matches out of position… to show that quality and confidence – it’s great to see.”

Clearly Neville thinks Maitland-Niles has a great future and early performances back up that evaluation. But lacking vital experience and playing out of position, should he be Arsenal’s first-choice left-back at this moment in time?

Leeds fans react as summer target Joe Bryan shines in Bristol City win

Reported Leeds United target Joe Bryan scored as Bristol City recorded a famous 2-1 win against Manchester United at Ashton Gate on Wednesday night as they reached the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, and Whites fans were quick to have their say on the left-sided player’s performance.

HITC reported during the summer that the Yorkshire outfit were keen to sign the 24-year-old to replace outgoing left-back Charlie Taylor, but a move never materialised and they eventually brought in Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on loan from Manchester United instead.

However, the 20-year-old has struggled for game time and Gaetano Berardi has largely been playing out of position there in recent weeks.

Bryan scored a sensational goal against the Red Devils and impressed at both ends of the pitch, and Leeds supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on his display.

It was clear to see that some many were tinged with regret with one describing the decision not to follow up on the versatile left-sided player as a “bad move”, while another said the club “missed a trick by not getting Bryan from Bristol City in the summer”.

HYS: An entire Man United XI of just one player…

We’re having an interesting debate here at Football FanCast towers – if you had to create an entire starting XI for a Premier League club from just one of their players, duplicated ten times, who would you choose and why?

Take Manchester United for instance. The opposition would rarely get the ball off eleven Juan Matas, but during the rare moments when they actually do, would the Spanish playmaker be able to hold off counter-attacks when he’s playing at centre-half?

Likewise, Romelu Lukaku offers a combination of height, power and goalscoring prowess, which would make him a better option than most at both ends of the pitch. But does he have the guile to link play from the back to the front?

Perhaps someone more versatile like Antonio Valencia would be a better choice, or Paul Pogba who boasts an impressive all-round game. But do they have enough magic to consistently get the ball into the back of the net?

It’s proving a head-scratcher for the writers at FFC – so we’re hoping Man United fans can help. Let us know who you’d feel most comfortable making a whole Red Devils XI from by voting below…

Martinez wants to partner Hernandez against Wigan, West Ham United fans react

Antonio Martinez has become quite the fan favourite at West Ham United this season due to his performances in the development squad.

The 20-year-old was rewarded with a first-team debut earlier this month when the team took on Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.

Manager David Moyes is yet to give the forward minutes in the Premier League, but the Spaniard could have a chance of featuring against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Hammers face the League One leaders at the DW Stadium in the hope of continuing their FA Cup campaign.

Ahead of the match, Martinez claimed in an interview with West Ham’s official website that his dream would be to play alongside Javier Hernandez against Wigan.

The Mexico international has been in the headlines of late, with Sky Sports reporting that the former Manchester United star is open to leaving the London Stadium due to a lack of game time.

With Martinez expressing his admiration for Hernandez, West Ham fans have called for the pair to team up.

Southampton fans call for Pellegrino to be sacked

Southampton announced on Monday that young Frenchman Yan Valery had signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League club.

Valery joined the Saints from Rennes in the summer of 2015, and after impressing in the club’s Under-23 set-up, has now been handed a new contract until the summer of 2020.

It was a big day for the youngster, but unfortunately the Southampton fans were not on hand to offer their congratulations on social media.

Instead, the supporters took the opportunity to call on the club to sack head coach Mauricio Pellegrino, who continues to come under pressure following a poor run of form.

The Saints suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon to leave them in 18th position in the Premier League table on just 26 points.

Southampton have only won once in the league since the end of November, and a number of the club’s fans cannot believe that Pellegrino, who worked wonders at Alaves last season, still has a job at the club.

Everton fans have high hopes for teenager Davies

Tom Davies will not turn 20 until June, but the midfielder has already made 60 appearances for Everton’s first team since debuting during the 2015-16 season.

The 19-year-old scored twice in 25 appearances for the Toffees last term, and has managed one goal in 33 games in all competitions for the Merseyside outfit during the 2017-18 campaign.

That said, Davies has only started 13 Premier League matches this season, with head coach Sam Allardyce often preferring more experienced players in the middle of the park.

Everton will travel to Watford in the Premier League this weekend, and it will be very interesting to see whether Davies makes the XI after scoring against Crystal Palace last time out.

The Everton fans are in no doubt when it comes to whether the midfielder should be in the team on a weekly basis.

Indeed, the supporters have been on Twitter posting tribute messages after a recent study showed that Davies was one of the most promising teenagers in European football.

Player Ratings: Arsenal’s best and worst players Man City?

As weeks go, they don’t get much worse than the past seven days for the Gunners. Almost embarrassed by Swedish side Ostersunds in the second leg of their Europa League tie in midweek, Arsenal were then given a thorough dressing down by Manchester City in the League Cup final yesterday.

Sergio Aguero gave City the lead at Wembley just after the quarter-hour mark when he took down a long punt by Claudio Bravo and lobbed David Ospina in the Arsenal goal.

The Citizens then doubled their lead when Vincent Kompany redirected Ilkay Gundogan’s cross-cum-shot past Ospina with just under an hour played, and David Silva made it a rout when he rounded Calum Chambers seven minutes later and lashed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

It was a humiliating defeat for the Gunners, who in fairness had suffered ailments during the week to Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil. But there can be no excuse for such a toothless performance yesterday.

January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang probably came closest to providing Arsenal with a goal when his tap-in inside the six-yard box was snuffed out by Kyle Walker, while Jack Wilshere at least earned the Gunners territory in midfield by winning free kicks with daring dribbles.

But were there any redeeming individual performances for fans of the north London club? We’ll let Gunners fans decide by giving each player who took part in the Carabao Cup final an individual performance rating out of ten…

West Ham United fans question Gold after protest march is called off

Groups of West Ham United supporters were due to hold a march in protest against the club’s board prior to next weekend’s Premier League home game against Burnley.

However, the action has now been called off following positive talks between the Real West Ham Fans Action Group and vice-chairwoman Karren Brady.

Supporters have long been frustrated with the club’s owners and board members.

The decision to leave Upton Park to move into the London Stadium in Stratford is one of the main reasons why there is a disconnect between the fans and the hierarchy.

Many feel that the new state-of-the-art ground lacks the atmosphere that the club’s of home created.

On Thursday, the Hammers released a statement on their official website confirming that the protest march scheduled for March 10 has been cancelled.

Co-chairman David Gold posted a link to the online piece via Twitter, and within the responses, some fans insisted that the protest will still go ahead.

Newcastle hail Perez for playing against Southampton

Fair play to Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez.

The Spaniard has revealed that he played against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon just three days after his grandmother had passed away.

The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes of his team’s 3-0 win over the Saints, and was extremely impressive in a forward position.

On Monday, Perez took to Twitter to reveal that he featured despite a family tragedy, and the Newcastle fans, who are absolutely delighted with head coach Rafael Benitez at the moment, have been paying tribute to the former Spain Under-21 international.

Perez, who has scored four times and registered three assists in 29 appearances for Newcastle this season, is currently in his fourth straight season with the Magpies.

He now seems to be part of the furniture at St James’ Park, and his classy Twitter post at the start of this week will only increase his popularity at the Premier League club.

Alisson is the perfect new number one for Liverpool

As reported by The Sun, Liverpool’s pursuit of Roma goalkeeper Allison has suffered a setback after his agent played down a move away from the Italian club this summer.

What’s the story?

Both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet have failed to impress consistently between the sticks for the Reds this season and as such fans see the goalkeeping position as a top priority when the transfer window opens.

One player they’ve been linked with in recent months is £62m-rated goalkeeper Alisson, currently impressing in Seria A with Italian giants Roma.

However, the prospect of him leaving the club now seems further away after his agent played down recent transfer speculation, directly referencing the Reds.

As quoted by The Sun, Ze Maria Neis said:

Alisson is certainly one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He loves Roma, 100 per cent. Will he sign a new contract? Now he is focused only in Serie A and on the Champions League. We have a great relationship with Roma. We never spoke with Liverpool about him. Now Alisson only thinks in present time.

While ambiguous enough to not rule out anything, it’s clear that the goalkeeper nor his representative are interested in forcing a move away from his current club, but should Liverpool ramp up their interest him with a firm bid?

How good is he?

Helping Roma to an impressive 18 clean sheets so far this term, the Brazilian number one is considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now.

His side are currently in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and while they are struggling to challenge for the Serie A title, they certainly have ambitions in that regard too, aided by elite talents like Alisson.

If Liverpool are to challenge for major honours too, they need as stable a defence as possible and after adding Virgil van Dijk to the squad, bringing in a quality and trusted number one behind him is crucial.

Alisson certainly fits the bill and even though speculation about his exit from Roma has cooled, the Reds should keep their thoughts on his situation.
