Liverpool eye swoop for Timo Werner

Liverpool are lining up a move to bring Chelsea striker Timo Werner to Anfield as Jurgen Klopp seeks to bolster his attacking options.

What’s the news?

That’s according to Football Insider, who stated that the Reds are eyeing up a move for the Germany international this summer as Klopp looks to add another forward to his squad.

Chelsea will be looking for a fee of around £33m if any potential transfer is to take place and this is comfortably inside Liverpool’s budget, especially with funds generated from the sales of Sadio Mane and (imminently) Takumi Minamino.

This will be the second time Klopp has wanted to bring the striker to Liverpool after missing out on him in 2019.

Just imagine him and Diaz

The move for Werner may come as a surprise to the Anfield faithful, especially considering the player’s underwhelming spell in the Premier League during his two seasons at Chelsea.

A £47.5m signing in 2020, Werner has scored 23 goals in 89 appearances, adding 21 assists, not exactly setting the world on fire at Stamford Bridge.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Nonetheless, he could well fit into Klopp’s style of play and become a useful signing, especially with the departures of Divock Origi, Mane and most probably Minamino which have lessened the Reds’ attacking depth.

Despite his struggles in England, the 26-year-old German could still offer something different to the Liverpool attack, and his figures when he was at RB Leipzig may suggest that Klopp could get the best out of him.

Werner netted an incredible 93 goals and registered 40 assists in just 158 matches with the Bundesliga club, a record which promoted Chelsea to splash the cash on the player.

He has shown glimpses of what he is capable of over the last 12 months, ranking in the 98th percentile among strikers in Europe’s top five leagues for touches in the attacking penalty area with 8.12 per match, while also taking 3.16 shots per game.

If Werner can return to the form which saw him dazzle at Leipzig, he could form an effective duo with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz – who made an instant impression upon coming to England in January – and add to his Premier League goal tally. It’s not for nothing that his Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz dubbed him “unpredictable”.

It might be a risky move, but if Klopp pulls it off and it works out, it could be one of his finest Liverpool signings to date.

Andy Appleby drops Derby takeover news

Andy Appleby has in the last 48 hours delivered six very encouraging words on the Derby County takeover saga.

The Lowdown: Appleby submits Derby bid

The League One side went all the way back to square one earlier this month after it was announced that preferred bidder, Chris Kirchner, had withdrawn his offer to buy the Rams due to not being able to meet a financial deadline set by Quantuma.

As a result of this, the administrators have now gone back to the drawing board to try and find a new candidate to take over at Pride Park, with Mike Ashley and Steve Morgan just two of the names in the frame.

Despite their interest, it was the former County chairman himself who made the first official move after submitting a bid last week, and he has now dropped a big update on where his saga with the club stands.

The Latest: Appleby’s six-word update

Speaking to Crain’s Detroit Business (as quoted by Derbyshire Live), Appleby wasn’t keen to give too much away, but suggested that negotiations were moving in the right direction. In a promising six-word message, he said:

“It’s down to the final strokes.”

The source also claims that the American is ‘optimistic’ about his offer and that he expects to learn the outcome ‘this week’, leaving supporters with just days to wait.

The Verdict: Exciting

The Derby takeover has been a never-ending saga and one that fans, alongside all associated with the club, will want to be over as soon as possible, and after this fresh update, it sounds as though the Rams might hold a little bit of hope after all.

Appleby already spent seven years with the Midlands outfit, having been chairman from 2008 to 2015, so it comes as no surprise to see that he is eager to do everything within his power to stop his former club from entering liquidation.

He is up against some very strong competitors, but this would suggest that he is currently the leading contender to be the one to complete the takeover, and what a fitting way it would be for him to make his return.

Manchester United eye Tammy Abraham

Manchester United are plotting a deal to sign Roma striker Tammy Abraham during the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato (via Football Italia), which states that Manchester United are keen on bringing the striker back to the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

He joined Roma in a deal worth €40m (£34m) last season and has impressed in Rome, scoring 26 goals in 52 appearances, and winning the Europa Conference League.

Arsenal are also interested in the player and Man United face a battle on their hands if they want to secure his services.

Erik ten Hag will love him

One of the main priorities for Ten Hag will be to add some strength to the United attack this summer. Last season, the only forward to score more than ten goals was Cristiano Ronaldo (24) and this overreliance on the 37-year-old needs to be avoided going forward.

Abraham already has a wealth of Premier League experience and could slot into the United side with ease. His move to Roma has enabled him to mature as a player and experience a totally different style of play, which appears to have helped his growth.

The 24-year-old scored a goal every 182 minutes in Serie A last season, had 2.6 shots per match, and missed 19 big chances, meaning with some more composure he could have added to his haul.

He also added four assists in the league, while making one key pass per match, proving that he can turn provider when needs be.

At Chelsea he was dubbed “unreal” by journalist Nizaar Kinsella, whilst also being described as “perfect” following his Serie A debut against Fiorentina. Indeed, that’s exactly what he’d be at Old Trafford if a deal can be concluded.

A move for the Englishman makes a lot of sense, his goalscoring ability is excellent and he is yet to enter his peak years as a player. With Arsenal interested, however, ten Hag may need to act sooner rather than later.

Newcastle transfer news on Fernandes

Journalist Jacque Talbot has now revealed some ‘discussions’ that have taken place between Newcastle United and Braga winger Roger Fernandes.

The Lowdown: Record-breaker

Fernandes burst onto the scene last season at Braga, and at just 15 years of age, he became the youngest player ever to feature in the Portuguese top flight.

Still only 16 and capable of playing on either flank, he is sure to attract plenty of interest this summer, and so the St. James’ Park outfit may have some competition on their hands to secure his signature.

The Latest: ‘Discussions’

Taking to Twitter, Talbot has revealed that there have already been some ‘discussions’ between the North East club and Fernandes over a possible move to Tyneside:

“Heard there was some discussions between Newcastle and Roger Fernandes of Braga.”

The Verdict: Squad player?

It is hard to envisage how exactly Fernandes would fit in should he make the move to the Magpies, given that he is only 16 and unlikely to be ready for full pelt Premier League football.

However, he is already playing senior football in Portugal, and was impressive when called upon by Braga last term, with three goals in 11 games (Transfermarkt).

The winger may not start ahead of the more experienced heads of Allan Saint-Maximin or Ryan Fraser, but he could still be a useful squad player for Eddie Howe, and so this is a deal that the Toon may be looking to the future with, spotting a talent with immense long-term potential.

Leeds: Romano drops Perkins claim

Leeds United have instigated discussions to sign highly-rated West Hm United youngster Sonny Perkins, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown: Rising talent

Signed by West Ham from the Leyton Orient academy system in 2019, Perkins has shone for the youth sides in London, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 53 outings.

That impressive form earned the young centre-forward first-team recognition under David Moyes last term, initially featuring in two Europa League contests before being handed a Premier League bow in Leeds’ 3-2 victory at The London Stadium in January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-4/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now, having failed to reach an agreement over a new deal in East London, the Whites could be about to swoop in…

The latest: Romano makes claim

Taking to Twitter, renowned transfer specialist Romano has claimed Leeds and Aston Villa have opened up a dialogue with the ‘promising’ 18-year-old.

He said: “Leeds and Aston Villa have opened talks to sign promising forward Sonny Perkins. Perkins has made 3 appearances for West Ham. Both clubs want to sign him.”

Elsewhere, a report from The Guardian has said that Tottenham are also interested in the England youth international.

The verdict: Budding prospects

Although the senior development of the likes of Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell was somewhat fast-tracked last season due to an overwhelming amount of injuries decimating the Elland Road ranks, all three prodigious young talents shone in their own right.

Two years older than Perkins, Gelhardt and the Hammers starlet have enjoyed similar paths until now with the Liverpool-born Leeds ace scoring three times in six England Under 18 outings, whilst the current West Ham man has two strikes in six appearances at the same level.

Last season, the teenager scored 12 times and provided one assist in 21 Premier League 2 displays, highlighting a readiness to take a potentially seamless next step in a promising career.

Seemingly not afraid to give youth a chance, adding Perkins – who was described as an ‘exciting player’ by Premier League stalwart Mark Noble – to Jesse Marsch’s options would make an abundance of sense, especially for what is likely to be a relatively low financial outlay.

Leeds dealt James Garner blow

A crushing Leeds United development has emerged on their pursuit of James Garner heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Jacque Talbot has revealed that the Lillywhites will not be signing the English central midfielder ahead of the 2022/23 campaign as their Premier League rivals are refusing to do a deal with them.

He tweeted:

“No chance James Garner goes Everton or Leeds. Man United won’t sell him permanently either. Full story out later this week.”

The reporter then added:

“Man United aren’t going to sell to a direct rival like Everton or Leeds of all clubs and potentially see him flourish into a world-beater. Could turn out to be like another Wilfred Zaha situation.”

Supporters will be gutted

The supporters will be gutted by this claim from Talbot as it comes as a huge blow to Jesse Marsch heading into the next Premier League season.

Garner enjoyed a sublime campaign in the second tier on loan with Nottingham Forest and he would have been an exciting addition to Leeds’ squad.

In the Championship, the midfielder averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.26 across 41 matches as he delivered excellent performances on a consistent basis. He also produced four goals and eight assists from the middle of the park as he showcased his ability to contribute in the final third.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Defensively, he put himself about as he made 3.2 tackles and interceptions and won 3.9 duels per game for Steve Cooper’s side. This shows that he works hard off the ball to win possession back for his side and can be an asset at both ends of the pitch.

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson lavished him with praise in the 2021/22 campaign, saying:

“Garner has been exceptional at Forest. He is an example of why players get sent out on loan.

“He can play at the top level and I think he has proven that at Forest. I don’t think he’s one that will go straight into the Man United side but I think there is a first-team role there for him and he will feature next season.”

These comments show that the eye test matches the statistics as a former professional was impressed by his displays and he had outstanding stats.

Therefore, Leeds fans will now be gutted that the club has ‘no chance’ of being able to sign Garner. The 21-year-old would have been an exciting signing for the club but Victor Orta will now need to identify alternative targets in the coming weeks.

Tottenham: Lilywhites chiefs willing to back Conte with risky move

Tottenham Hotspur ‘hierarchy’ are willing to back manager Antonio Conte with risky signing this summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Spurs set for exciting summer?

The Lilywhites, after announcing a £150 million equity increase earlier this week, were further boosted by the news that Conte is now set to stay for the 2022/2023 Premier League season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Transfer chief Fabio Paratici and the head coach even held a meeting in Italy on Friday to discuss the club’s summer recruitment plans with a major overhaul on the cards, according to The Telegraph.

It is believed that the Italian is set for Tottenham’s full backing, and as per The Athletic, they’re even willing to go against their transfer policy for one of Conte’s targets.

The Latest: Tottenham hierarchy willing to make risky Eriksen move…

According to their information, despite the ‘element of risk involved’ in re-signing former star Christian Eriksen on a Bosman deal, it is believed that Spurs ‘hierarchy’ are willing to make ‘exceptions’ in ‘exceptional circumstances’.

Signing the Dane is viewed as a gamble given his ‘harrowing health scare’ at Euro 2020, not to mention the fact he has recently turned 30 with little sell-on value.

However, there is an ‘acceptance’ among the north London chiefs, including Paratici, that a sensational reunion for Eriksen could be viewed as one of those exceptional circumstances over bringing in younger players.

The Verdict: Promising update…

The Athletic also state that Eriksen is a personal target for Conte, backing recent reports that the former Chelsea boss is personally ‘pressing’ for his signature.

We believe the Tottenham boardroom have adopted the right stance when it comes to making a move for the international, especially considering his phenomenal campaign at Brentford under Thomas Frank.

He finished 2021/2022 as their best-rated player by average match performance with a solid 7.37/10 (WhoScored), not to mention his creativity is seemingly intact.

Making more key passes per 90 in the final third than any Brentford player, the midfield ace could well gift Conte and Spurs an injection of quality further forward.

West Ham: Moyes steps up transfer chase for Andriy Lunin

West Ham United manager David Moyes is stepping up his transfer push ahead of what could be an interesting 2022/23 Premier League season, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Moyes set for busy summer…

As per reports, the east Londoners seem set for a busy summer, with four departures already confirmed and the Irons’ manager increasing the tempo in attempting to land his targets (Evening Standard).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-5/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Talks have been held over Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd and it is believed that a striker, central midfielder and left-back are ‘high’ on Moyes’ personal wish list.

This comes after West Ham’s failure to land much-needed upgrades in January, with the Scotsman seemingly determined to make sure they have sufficient depth for next season.

The Latest: West Ham set for imminent Lunin talks…

According to the print edition of The Sunday Mirror (via West Ham Zone), Moyes and co are set for imminent talks to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin ‘this week’.

West Ham, and by extension their manager, are ‘stepping up their loan interest’ in the Ukraine international, who is personally ‘looking for a temporary move’ away from the Bernabeu.

The report claimed that a loan with the option to buy is possible as the Hammers eye a move for the 6 foot 4 powerhouse.

The Verdict: Surprising claim…

Reports have suggested that West Ham are actually ‘close’ to finalising a permanent deal for Paris-Saint Germain loanee Alphonse Areola, so we believe that this update comes as a surprising one.

Unless there has been an unknown twist to the tale, or if Moyes is planning to significantly strengthen his goalkeeping department to have three brilliant deputies for Lukasz Fabianski, a move for Lunin could make little sense when taking into account their alleged interest in sealing a permanent swoop for Areola.

Leeds: 49ers likely to buy out Radrizzani

Leeds United’s ownership could change hands this summer, according to Rory Smith…

What’s the word?

The New York Times journalist was recently speaking on the BBC Five Live Football Daily Podcast alongside pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards, where he revealed that the 49ers Enterprises will likely buy out chairman Andrea Radrizzani.

“How much money do Leeds actually have to spend?” asked the Sky Sports regular, to which the reliable reporter responded:

“Not a vast amount, that’s another problem, but I think that will change this summer as I suspect they’ll be bought out by the San Francisco 49ers, they already own 40 something per cent of the club and I think they will increase to become majority shareholders over the summer.”

American dream

This comes on the day that the Yorkshire giants officially announced the signing of Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg as the American links up with his former boss in a £25m deal.

Clearly, the Whites have – or had – money, so news that the 49ers are likely to complete a full takeover is certainly very encouraging and it’ll complete something of an American trifecta at Elland Road.

First came Marsch, then Aaronson and likely the NFL franchise taking full control.

We know that Radrizzani cannot afford to keep the club in the Premier League. His lack of spending, particularly during the most recent winter transfer window, saw Leeds flirt with relegation, having to stay up on the final day of the season.

Marsch and his predecessor Marcelo Bielsa have been crying out for additions, especially up front, where 2020/21 top scorer Patrick Bamford was only able to play nine league games this season due to a variety of lingering injuries.

There is also the prospect of seeing the likes of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips depart and they will need viable replacements; that won’t be cheap.

After survival and the arrival of Aaronson, those around west Yorkshire will surely be absolutely buzzing by this claim from Smith.

AND in other news, Orta now plotting Leeds offer for “exquisite” £12.5m target, imagine him & Aaronson…

Mohamed Salah backed for Liverpool exit

Mohamed Salah will depart Liverpool if he hasn’t accepted their latest huge contract offer, according to former Scotland international Alan Hutton.

The Lowdown: Salah coy over future

The future of the 29-year-old has been a key talking point for months now, arguably having an impact on his overall form for the Reds.

While Salah is clearly happy at Liverpool, he and the club are yet to agree on a new deal, with wages appearing to be the main stumbling block.

With the Egyptian’s current deal expiring in 2023, this is crunch time regarding his next move, as the Reds look to tie down their star man.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-33/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: £80m final offer

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton, a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, claimed that Liverpool can only offer Salah so much, reacting to a report from the same outlet detailing a ‘huge’ four-year offer worth £80m:

“Well, I think you’re looking at now. Surely, if they’ve offered him that, that’s their top level.

“Unless Mo Salah has this thing in his mind where money’s not the issue, it’s not about that. It’s not about the length of contract, it’s about another challenge in some other league.

“If that is is his wish, then it’s up to him. Then it’s about: ‘Okay, my time’s up here,’ and Klopp saying: ‘Okay, I’m going to sell you because you’re into your last year.’

“If he’s happy at Liverpool, that is an unbelievable contract at a club where he’s happy. He’s done ever so well so there’s no problem there for me.”

The Verdict: No player bigger than the club

The hope is clearly that Salah will sign a new Liverpool deal, having scored a remarkable 155 goals in 252 appearances and been hailed as ‘world-class’ by Jurgen Klopp.

That being said, it is a saga that has the potential to be troublesome, and ultimately, no player is bigger than the Reds and they can only offer the forward so much money.

It still feels likely that a compromise will be met and Salah will extend his stay at Anfield – if not, his next move will only feel like a step down in his career, given Liverpool’s current brilliance as one of the world’s top two teams.
